Conservation & Renovation
The following examples represent my professional experience of conservation and renovation projects.
These have included repairs to high-end private dwellings in listed buildings, renovation to historic buildings prior to a change of use, and the replacement of historic features and improvements to external areas for listed buildings.
Refurbishment and adaptation of Victorian barracks to Cadet facility, Chichester
The brief for this project involved the restoration of the fabric of the existing building and internal reconfiguration to suit the needs of a cadet facility. This involved reconstruction of timber suspended floors, damp and waterproofing and repair to lathe and plaster ceilings and concrete soffits, as well as new partitions, suspended ceilings, and new finishes throughout. Externally, significant repairs to brickwork and stonework and canopies were required as well as new waterproof finishes to flat roofing throughout.
I was involved in work from RIBA stage 2 through to completion, including carrying out site inspections and snagging, as well as assessing the requirements for repairs to the building fabric and liasing with the contractors responsible for these works.
Replacement of railings and new external surfacing, St John’s Chapel, Chichester
This project involved the replacement of iron railings that had been removed from the frontage of St John’s chapel during the Second World War. Alongside this, a refurbishment of the external forecourt was planned, including ramping up of the surface to the chapel’s front entrance to provide step-free access.
I produced feasibility studies showing alternative surface treatments and examples with and without replacement railings. I also prepared a planning application including plans, elevations and 3D views.
